ACT® & SAT® Winter 2023 Test Dates, Plus Holiday Season Test-Prep Tips

The holiday season is well underway, and that often means a lot of extra obligations and activities for our students. This is the time of year when holiday shows, musical performances, and recitals take place right alongside familial traditions and celebrations—all heaped on top of school assignments, projects, and assessments. December can be quite a balancing act for us and our clients, and while we want to relish the holiday season as much as possible, we also don’t want to let important dates and deadlines slip by.

The start of December has both ACT® and SAT® test dates (see below) scheduled. If your clients took your advice in the fall, then they are primed and ready to clinch that solid score. But for our students who are in the beginning/middle stages of test prep, they’ll want to set their eyes on the upcoming ACT® and SAT® test dates this winter. It’s a great time to register for these upcoming tests, and have a fixed goal on their calendar to aim toward.

Holiday Season Test-Prep Tips

Registration is just the start! With the holiday season upon us, here are some pieces of advice to share with your clients to help make the most out of study sessions while still finding time to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!

Mark your calendars! With a test date set and marked on the calendar, tutors and clients can work together to create a more dependable test-prep plan to plot out a realistic schedule that maximizes the time they have for their academic development and growth.

Be sure to keep holiday travel and extracurricular events in mind and plan around them.

If possible, maximize some of the time they have over their holiday break. Just be sure to keep expectations realistic and avoid overwhelming them with too much work. They want to enjoy their holidays just as much as everyone else!

Prioritize. Try to create optimal study sessions by focusing on the most important concepts and subject areas. Especially during an already bustling time of year, you don’t want your clients to overextend. Keeping priorities in check is essential!

Find balance. Test prep during the holiday season is all about balance. With the right test-prep plan, students will be able to accommodate both their holiday celebrations and their studying. Compromises will have to be made to find time for everything, but adapting test prep to maximize the time they do have to practice and study is the key.

Find practical ways for students to study. It may not be feasible (or enjoyable) for students to practice interest rate problems or puzzle out how to interpret nonlinear equations and expressions while visiting Aunt Marge, but it may be possible to bring a good book to help work on their reading comprehension skills and vocabulary. Consider ways that students can realistically practice and study while riding/flying/visiting friends and family over the holidays.

Prepare for setbacks during post-holiday reviews. Not all students will want to/be able to dedicate adequate time and effort toward test prep during this holiday season, and we need to be prepared for that. Expect to spend a few post-holiday study sessions getting back on track.
